Grown Men Don’t Cry
Chico Alverez parked himself
on the steps of a neglected brownstone at 114th Street and Lexington in Spanish Harlem. He was eating his lunch, chewing the leftovers of a bacalaitos that he picked up at one of the local cuchifrito stands. The popular cod fish fritters were all the rage in his neighborhood. He washed it down with a bottle of Michelob Ultra, wiping remnants of the foam from the beer from his mouth with his hand. Lighting a Marlboro, he took a long deep drag. He had just taken the No. 6 subway train from South Street Seaport back to his apartment in the heart of el barrio, braving the summer subway swelter to make it home in time for a meeting with Jesus Moreno.
A David Henrie look- alike, Chico had a suave and sophisticated demeanor. His jet black hair set the stage for a huge pair of very dark, sexy eyes that lay under thick brows. His lips were plump and his nose was angular. The only facial hair was a small tuft of a mustache. One lonely gold hoop accentuated his right ear lobe. His jeans were loose fitting, probably a size too large for his long, lean frame. He wore a white t-shirt with an elaborate sketch of a red dragon covering his upper body. He had a small tattoo on his right forearm that almost exactly matched the dragon on his shirt. He wore brown sandals. A blue rope chain encircled his neck. He was good looking and well groomed. The Italian blood flowing through his veins stood out in his chiseled features. But, there was a hint of his Spanish lineage, outlining his mouth and nose.
Oblivious to the massive rumblings of the Metro- North trains and the infectious tempo of the spicy salsa music coming from a store front boom box, Chico tightened his fists, dreading what he was about to do. Flicking the cigarette into the gutter, he took a long deep breath of fresh air
He waved to several people as they walked past him. He called out, “Hola. Qué hermoso día de hoy. Ten cuidado.” People respected him. Was it because they liked him or feared him?
