Time (CMH)
Time has no meaning when it’s here.
It’s when it is gone that you reflect
what more could have been done
within the time that came and went.
For once it’s gone it cannot be recalled.
What comes next is all that’s left.
So do, don’t do, redo, undo,
whatever you may choose.
Knowing that the time that’s here
will never come again.

Time Travels (CMH)
Time travels continually
With no stop button or reset
Through days and weeks
Passing by in slow motion
Accumulating into months and years
Without pause or reconsideration
Of that which occurs
Until it is past, then-
Memories are fast-forwarded
Words laboriously written
To record experiences
Good and bad valued equally
Becoming part of the future
Pages filled with knowledge
Reflecting values of all the authors
Each unique contribution
Becoming part of a complete set.

Now and Then (MLM)
Silent is the space
between now and then.
Noises of now
assault the senses-
sounds of strife,
conflict, joy,
the beauty of music,
Nature’s songs.
Taste-test from life’s bounty,
making choices,
which tease the taste buds.
See the complex patterns
that make up life’s rhythms,
zooming out to take in the stars,
zeroing in to examine the minute beauty
of the snowflake.
The senses bombard the brain,
feeding it to overflowing,
keeping it alert, storing images
for future use.
The sense of touch compliments the others,
putting us in intimate contact
with our environment,
feeling the textures of life
with fingertips and emotions-
sensations that make us alive,
molding one’s uniqueness.
But, there is silence between now and then,
then existing only in our thoughts
while now is consumed
with quiet imagining of what is to come,
what then will be
wondering how we will react
hoping for the best.

About the Book
The title, Dueling Sisters, refers not to the fact that they are fighting or arguing, but rather reveals the differences in their point of view and the way they perceive the world around them. Their poetry communicates these differences.
Raised in the same household, their individual life experiences led them in different directions. Marieta remained in
Their visions run the gamut from reflection on life, to nature's beauty and grandeur to social statement.
They have fun with their writing.
About the Author
Carolyn (Spurgeon) Headrick and Marieta (Spurgeon) McMillen were born in
The sisters both have a Master's degree in Education and each has a lifetime of experience with children of all ages.
Carolyn has worked with infants, toddlers, preschool, junior high, high school, and special education.
She currently operates a Family Day Care in her home.
Carolyn has three grown sons, five grand-children and three step-grandchildren.
Marieta has also worked with infants, toddlers, preschool, junior and senior high school, and special education. In addition, she taught at a Community College and has taken care of foster children. She currently is an adjunct professor of art and art history at
Marieta adopted two sons and has one grandson. The oldest boy died in 2001; the youngest still resides in his hometown.
Both sisters are creative, whether drawing or painting, writing poetry, stories, or mystery novels.
To borrow a phrase, it is a wonderful life.
