I knew that Mammy Cleo had heard Master Johnny talking ugly about me and I knew that she was afraid for my safety because of him. She knew I wasn't gonna take any guff off of Master Johnny. And by reminding me of my Father, Indian Charlie, she was trying to warn me of the dangers that come with going against these crazy hateful White men.
Mammy Cleo had also heard the White folks talking about Abe Lincoln signing some paper called the Emancipation Proclamation which was suppose to set the Black slaves free. Mammy Cleo said,
"I too old to worry about such things, but I ready to say goodbye and wish God's love to any slaves who wanna try freedom. That would be a good thing for Aaron if he want it. He young enuff' to 'preciate freedom. I too old now.”
I put all of these other matters out of my mind for the moment and I decided,
"I read the note from Rev. Gordan later this evening when I truly alone."
As I rode down the road I began to think about my problem with that drunk fool, Master Johnny. Today was his eighteenth birthday too and I had heard it said that Missy Caroline was planning a big party for him later in the evening at the big house.
"I won't be a bit surprise if Master Johnny who always accusin' me of "sass" whenever his Daddy go out of town for a minister's conference don't try to threaten to have his friends give me a whipping if I don't call him "Mister Gordan" and answer him with respect when I speak to him by saying "Yessuh Boss".
The thought of this enraged Aaron to think of the drunken mob that would probably be at Master Johnny's party and the stupid games that they were probably planning to play, with him as the butt of the joke.
" I gonna have to get away from this place 'fore Master Johnny Gordan kill me or I kill him. I gonna have to leave here real soon that's all there is to it."
Next, my mind wondered to more pleasant thoughts about the plans I was working out concerning how me and my sweetheart, Martha would be getting together.
My mind was flooded with thoughts of this beautiful woman that I love who is in love with me.

About the Book
Grace and Mercy Brought Us Through is loosely based on the life of my great-grandfather Rev. Aaron Davis. Rev. Davis was born into slavery and grew up during the Civil War. He received freedom with the Emancipation Proclamation and became a circuit riding minister with the Methodist Church in Mississippi. His life as a preacher is well documented , but little was known about his personal life. My Mother wrote a short story about her grandfather and she stated that his Mother was named Tena and his Father was named Indian Charlie. From this information I filled in the blanks and found a fascinating story that took me from Senegal West Africa, through the Middle Passage, through plantation life in Mississippi, through the life of Native Americans in Mississippi and the Black Seminoles in Florida and on to the life of a Black circuit riding preacher. With every word I wrote I realized that God's Grace and Mercy really did bring us through and made us strong people.
About the Author
My name is Phyllis Jean Robinson. I live in Chicago, Illinois. I am fortunate to have a supportive family who is my cheering section. They include my Mother, Ann Brown, my daughters and sons-in-law Belinda Robinson Jones{Rev. Melvin) and Kelley Ann Robinson Baker (David) and my beautiful grand daughter Vashti Kaylis Baker.
This is my fourth book and my first book of historical fiction. My other three books are romance novels.
