About the Book

In a poignant, yet humorous style, Silverman takes you along on an incredible journey of pleasure and pain.  His book reaches from the “agony” of failed marriages, loss of other relationships and termination of employment to the “ecstasy” of spending sprees, promiscuity, risky behavior, instability and irrational outbursts of elation.  Highlights of these experiences are all a part of this recantation.  The reader is catapulted into Silverman’s insightful, yet often warped picture of his world.  In fact, Silverman attributes his being alive today to “intrusive” interventions and eventual comprehensive treatment, with healthy doses of medication management, individual therapy, couples therapy, support groups and a small circle of caring and understanding friends.  Anyone living with bipolar disorder, as a consumer or a family member, will gain a fuller understanding of the insidious nature of this disease and the havoc that it reaps.  It is anticipated that these insights may lead the reader to dealing more effectively with this disease and deciding to live a richer, fuller, more meaningful life.

About the Author

Dr. Silverman is a licensed Clinical Psychologist.  He describes the onset of his depression and bipolar disorder as “prenatal.”  The illnesses later developed more fully, with lives of their own.  Intensification of symptoms followed stressful events and improper medication management.  Dr Silverman has been quite open about his illnesses.  “My disclosures help provide a tight bond between me and my patients.  They are far more apt to let me into their world to offer assistance and direction.”  Dr. Silverman is currently vice-president of the Chicago Chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.  He is also a member of the national organization and is included on their list of professional speakers as well as their list of patient-recommended professionals.  He has served as a university professor and counseling center director.  In addition to this book, he is the author of a text on substance abuse counseling and over fifty articles on a wide range of topics in psychology.  He developed the Cognitively-Based Decision Model of treatment and has presented lectures and workshops on his approach in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Singapore and the Philippines.  He currently resides in Chicago, IL and can be reached through email at dr_decision@comcast.net or his website: www.manuelsilverman.com.
