With thumbs in belt loops, Dad stood tall, proclaimed aloud to one and all: “We’re standing on the threshold of a NEW ERA…”
he would start, and speak the truth within his heart.
Our kitchen entrance was his stage, reviewed his life from age to age.
Irreverent girls, my sis and I knew what came next; she’d giggle, sigh,
"We're always on the threshold of something new."
In late 1930s, it was certainly true. Refrigerators, telephones, autos too.
People looking for different things to do.
I never thought I'd last to see the changing of a century.
The tumblers move with lightning speed – Christ’s odometer will soon now read 2000! (Are we dreaming this?)
I still can feel my mother's kiss --
She's gone. Our Dad, and Papa too --
So threshold building's up to you.

About the Book
This poetry collection explores life's transitions -- childbirth and death, empty nests, retirement and grandchildren; pays tribute to cherished ones; and shares the awe of everyday wonders such as sunrises and rain, playful pets and exotic travel.
About the Author
Izola Ethel Fedford Collins (Zola Ford) was born in the family home in Galveston, Texas on October 26, 1929, and educated in the Galveston school system. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Prairie View University and the Master of Music degree from Northwestern University in Illinois.
She organized and directed three school bands in Texas -- Bay City, Hitchcock and Galveston Catholic. Retiring from Galveston ISD as an award-winning choir instructor, she then was elected citywide to the GISD Board of Trustees and served nine years, the last as president.
