Craack! The starting pistol fired, and the boys pushed off, trying to get as much speed as they could before they reached the marker. As Benny was approaching the flag he called to Brad. "Have you seen your back wheel?" he panted. "What's the matter with it?" shouted Lee. Brad did not hear as he was concentrating on steering Zoom One. "The pin's loose!" Benny's voice faded away as Zoom One passed the start. Now Brad and Lee were out in front. It was downhill all the way to the shopping centre. They were picking up speed, and just ahead of Streaker. Benny had put all his strength into the push and had given Zoom One just the edge it needed. "See you at the finish," Lee called behind him to Wincey, but Wincey did not answer. Down through the avenue of jacaranda trees the gentle slope was increasing the speed of the carts, and the roar of the wheels on the hard road made speech difficult. "Where's Wincey?" yelled Brad. "About two lengths behind." Lee shouted, but his voice was whipped away by the wind and Brad barely heard him. "I'm going to brake when we get to the shops, Brad. We're going too fast." Lee yelled over the top of the noise of the rattling cart. "No, no! Don't brake, Lee. We'll make it!" "We'll crash! We've never been this fast before, Brad. I'm going to brake." "Don't brake, Lee! Brad screamed. “Lean right into the bend." Zoom one thundered into shopping centre. "Now, Lee! Lean right over as far as you can." Lee closed his eyes and leaned out with Brad - convinced the cart would overturn on the bend. It was the part of the course where most entries failed. The drivers either took the bend too wide and could not get around, or the passenger braked too hard and left the cart with insufficient speed to get up Nags Hill and the finish line. Zoom One careered around the bend on two wheels, to the gasps of people lining the street. Then it was back on four wheels and racing up the hill. Five metres from the finish line the rear wheel flew off and passed Zoom One. With a screech of metal and a shower of sparks the axle gouged a rut in the road. But Brad's skill in steering around the bend had gained sufficient speed to force Zoom One over the finish line. Streaker finished second, one and a half metres behind. Wincey climbed out of his cart, closely followed by Snitch. "Now look what you've done, stupid!" hissed Wincey

About the Book
When Brad Stevens and Lee White see the UFO on the ground from their vantage point on Goanna Hill, they are at first excited. But their excitement turns to apprehension when they are caught and escorted to the space craft. Although they are unharmed the knowledge and secret gained from that visit will remain with them. The secret becomes a burden at times and although they have have never shared it, others are suspicious and attempt to find out what they are hiding. Their arch rivals, Wincey (Luke) Williams and Snitch (Cyril) Johnston will stop at nothing; including sabotage, to discover their secret. Their adventures as they dodge their enemies are are at times funny, always exciting and occasionally life threatening. But the biggest threat of all is totally unexpected, their life long friendship is tested
About the Author
PAUL ENGLAND, the eldest son of a minister, was born in the south-east of England during the Great Depression. At 17 he joined the Royal Navy and served during the 40s and 50s. Now living on the south coast of NSW Australia, Paul, always a family man, has 2 daughters, 6 grandchildren and a multitude of great grandchildren. Paul has been writing for many years, mostly articles and short stories, many of which have been published and broadcast. His first book Voyage of a Lifetime was published as a multi-media book and is the true story of an amazing voyage by an intrepid family from England to Australia. Zoom One is his first work of fiction, followed by Commando. They were written for his grandchildren and are the first in the series Knights of Bonalla.
