Hal slowly regained consciousness. It was pitch black and he was feeling an intense coldness on the side of his face. His first coherent thought was, "what's happened to me?" In the next second, he became aware of the excruciating pain in his right ankle. Still disoriented, he hadn't a clue where he was or why his ankle hurt so. Then it hit him, "the plane crashed and I'm still alive." The sheer impossibility of his being alive stunned him. It was several more minutes before he recovered his senses and began to take stock of his situation. Fact: he was on his side, wet, and very cold. Fact: he was immobilized and unable to move his body. Fact: it was dark and the only sound was the howling of the wind and snow whipping around him. He knew this however... he should have been killed in the crash, and yet, he was still alive. After another minute or so, his inner instincts warned him that the freezing temperature and the pain in his ankle would not disappear unless he did something soon. His confinement in the seat undoubtedly had saved his life. Now, however, it would become his deathbed unless he found a way to extricate himself. Restriction of movement seemed to center upon his waist. After several failed attempts to unbuckle his seatbelt he finally felt it unlatch and he rolled onto the hard icy surface where his seat had at last come to rest. His new position on the ice painfully reminded him that something was not right with his ankle. Gritting his teeth, he slowly inched away from his seat. The pain in his ankle

About the Author
William A. Plourde, Jr., grew up in San Diego, CA. and has resided in Palos Verdes Estates, CA for the past thirty-three years. He graduated from Pomona College in 1966, and from U.C. Davis Law School in 1969. He was a practicing attorney for thirty years, including service as General Counsel of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. Previously he has published a historical fiction novel entitled "THe Last Leatherjacket". He has been actively involved with Boy Scouts of America for over fifty-five years, and has received the Award of Merit, as well as the Silver Beaver, and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Awards. Plourde is single and currently lives with his rescue Doberman Pinscher, "Bodie".
