“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (NKJV). Matthew 22:36-39
Jesus Christ was asked a question about which is the great commandment. Jesus replied, “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all of your mind”. Also, “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Although, the person in the bible was only asking about one great commandment, Jesus made it known that loving God with all of your heart, soul, and mind is just as important as loving your neighbor as yourself. Love is how Jesus Christ differentiates His true disciples from the world. Jesus gives His disciples a new commandment to love one another. In John 13:34-35, Jesus says “I give you a new commandment: that you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another. By this shall all [men] know that you are My disciples, if you love one another” [if you keep on showing love among yourselves] (AMP).
In today’s Christian community, people have forgotten or do not realize that love is the foundation of Christianity. God is love. Some people think that prosperity, big houses, nice cars, good marriages, college degrees, employment, ministry service, or a successful life represent that God has blessed you and you are His disciple, because you appear to have impressive material things or serve in ministry. However, Jesus does not mention anything about material things that impress people to determine that you are His disciple. He does not even say that all will know that you are my disciples if you serve in ministry. He says the way that everyone will know that you are His disciple is if you continue to show love one for another.
God is love. In order to fulfill these commandments, we need to be so full of God by establishing an intimate love relationship with Him that the love that we have for God extends to other people. We must welcome the Holy Spirit into our hearts. We must pray and ask the Holy Spirit to fill us up with His presence. We must ask the Holy Spirit to fill every void and dark place within us. We must ask the Holy Spirit to touch us where only He can touch us. We must ask the Holy Spirit to satisfy us from within where only He can satisfy us. We must ask the Holy Spirit to heal everything that has been broken within us. We must ask the Holy Spirit to make us whole and complete. The Holy Spirit wants to have an intimate relationship with true believers. He wants us to be completely in love with Him.
The Holy Spirit wants intimacy from our worship. When you break down the word intimacy, you can break it down like this “into-me-see”. When a person is intimate with you, they can see into you. They can emotionally feel what you feel, without you even saying a word. They understand you, even when you can’t quite articulate how you feel. They understand what is in your heart. They understand what you need. You can begin to realize that this is the same with the Holy Spirit, when you establish an intimate relationship with Him through worship to God.
Our worship to God should express to Him how much we love, adore, honor, respect, and bless Him. That is what we can do with words that we express with our mouth. However, true worship to God is also expressed by our actions of obedience to Him and His word. We also worship God in our financial giving in our tithes and offerings and also by being obedient to bless others financially. There are also those moments in worship to God that you cannot say a word. You can be so overwhelmed by His presence that you may cry, or lift your hands, or bow down, or lay on your face. No words can quite articulate how you feel. However, The Holy Spirit understands everything that is in your heart. He understands all of your emotions whether you are happy, sad, lonely, insecure, fearful, uncomfortable, distressed, or loving, just to name a few. He understands exactly what you feel even when you cannot quite express yourself. That is why He is also known as the Comforter. He wants to be so lovingly intimate with you that you realize that He is the only one that can truly satisfy every need in your life. The first real need is the love of God.
