Scrap was shaking in his tracks. He knew the cross hairs of rifle scopes were being focused on Little Sam. He’d seen it all before. He’d heard the roar of big-caliber guns in the night. They always sounded different in the night air! They were louder and their roar lasted longer! Scrap had lost a buddy on a night just like this one the very year before.
“Come on, Little Sam!” Scrap begged. “Pleased don’t look at that light – just come on!”
Little Sam threw his head high in the air. His huge antlers shined as white as snow in the bright light. Scrap momentarily thought about how big and strong Little Sam looked with his thick neck bulging and his muscles flexed!
“Come on! Come on, you big fool! You’re gonna get yourself killed!” Scrap yelled.
But there was no way Scrap could make Little Sam aware of the danger. Little Sam had never seen a spotlight before and the mystery of that bright beam took all his senses away. Scrap was literally dancing now. He was jumping around and blowing. But Little Sam stood motionless as he gazed at the light!
All at once the still night air erupted with the roar of a large caliber rifle. It was deafening. The sound rang over the hills and echoed down the hollows below the big lake. Geese and ducks on the pond flapped their wings and made their way across the water to get airborne. Frogs hushed in mid-croak as the echoes from the shot drifted further and further away.
Tensing up, Scrap watched and waited for Little Sam to fold and fall. It had been that way with his buddy! He had watched helplessly as his friend bolted backwards. And then, with his head high in the air, the buck had crumbled into a heap on the cold, frozen ground!
Little Sam still refused to move. Scrap was frantic. Suddenly he heard the ominous clack, clack, clack, and clack, the familiar sound of a bolt-action rifle chambering a new cartridge. As Little Sam continued to stare at the light, Scrap’s instincts took over. He blew loudly and plowed right into Little Sam, sending him reeling. The rifle discharged again, and hot lead from its barrel sent dirt and sparks flying from the rocky soil in the spot where Little Sam had been standing.
“Are you a complete fool?” Scrap screamed. “Get out of here now! Get the hell of out here before we both get killed!”

About the Book

About the Author
Ed Oliver is a teacher/coach in the Harris County School System in
Ed's passion for wildlife has been a lifelong affair. He is a conservationist first and foremost, and a longtime student of the white-tailed deer. Ed shot a huge buck in 1989 that appeared on the cover of Georgia Sportsman magazine. He has also been featured in several other wildlife publications. Having long been a pioneer for what he calls, “Give the young one's a chance,” Ed was an early proponent of Quality Deer Management (QDM).
“I'm not a great hunter by any stretch of the imagination,” Ed says. “Instead I'm a man who has a great appreciation and love for whitetails and for the great outdoors. The chase, the challenge, and the associations I've had with other hunters are the things that are most important to me.”
