In my youth and innocence, "Doughnut" to me, was a reference to the delicious fat pastries my parents served to all who entered "The Do-Nut Shop". I regarded my new nickname as a term of affection. I did not know I was fat. I was just a boy. Yet a fat little pastry I was in those formative years...

About the Book
Growing Up Doughnut is more than a coming of age tale. It is a story of simpler times in a small town that could be anywhere USA. A time when kids played until the street lights came on and parents watched out for everyone's kids. The story is funny, poignant, revealing, thought provoking and, at times, heartbreaking. Although somewhat autobiographical in nature, the story is a work of creative non-fiction with characters and theme that are universal.
About the Author
Don Shields was born and raised in Hoopeston, IL. The simplicity of life in the 1960s and 70s and the experience of growing up around people in his family's restaurant influenced his optimistic outlook on life. Shields also took on a part time career as a radio DJ, endowing him with the ability to enumerate his picture of life to his audience. He now lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife of 35 years, Dorothy, and near his kids James and Debi and his grand-dog Akkadian.
