The Basics for Successful Deer Hunting

If you have to choose between hunting over a rub, scrape or deer trail, I strongly recommend hunting over a rub. My observation of bucks over the years is that they are more likely to travel in an area where they have rubs during the day and are more prone to visit their scrapes at night. If there are no rubs or scrapes in the immediate area, hunt over a heavily travelled deer trail.
The last buck I shot was in a thick area that did not have any scrapes or rubs. As a result, I set up my climber stand fifty yards downwind on a tall tree from where their trail crossed a small dirt road deep in the woods. Two bucks lackadaisically walked down the deer trail around eight o'clock in the morning and entered the road. They looked like they had been playing poker all night and were not cautious of their surroundings. I was twenty five feet up in the tree and made sure I shot the larger of the two in the base of the neck so he would drop in place. This prevented me from having to track him through the thick brush and trees. I am not Bur Rabbit and therefore, did not have any desire to struggle in poison ivy and briars looking for a deer I shot.
