About the Book
The goal of this scale book is to provide a full range of fundamental techniques for the performer in advance studies on the saxophone and oboe. The patterns of the exercises are presented in a continuously rhythmic articulation for maximum development. The scale book is designed to supply the sax and oboe player with a full range of capabilities. The scale book consists of the following information: major scales, harmonic minor scales, major third progressions, minor third progressions, chromatic scales, major arpeggios, harmonic minor arpeggios, whole tone scales, diminished seventh chord study, augmented chord study, whole tones scales in thirds, chromatic scale in minor thirds, chromatic scale in major thirds, interval studies, and the altissimo register fingering chart for saxophones. Some of the scales are designed in two octave patterns. There is a continual, sixteen-note rhythmic pattern throughout all the scales. Take the time to work through the scale book routinely. This will allow you the opportunity to play through the book within an hour-long practice session and enhance your skills. Playing entire scales is rewarding to one's ability. As you unlock the doors to your untapped potential, you will earn the level of success you want to achieve in playing the saxophone and oboe. Some of the notes will be difficult to play, but striving to maintain a balanced embouchure and lower jaw pressure support should bring positive results. This scale book has been a personal project for the two of us for over twenty-nine years. We started working on it at Kentucky State University back in 1981.
About the Author
These two authors have designed a scale book that will enhance the overall musical abilities in playing scales for the advanced sax and oboe player. Samuel Lawrence Curry has over 30 years of music experience on the alto saxophone. He has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from Kentucky State University in Frankfort. He has studied with Rev. Dr. Roy E. McLuen, Assistant Professor of woodwinds at Kentucky State University. On March 6, 1983, Curry performed his well-received senior recital as a classical alto saxophonist. In 2002, he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership Studies from Lewis University, Romeoville, Illinois. In 2004, he retired with over 20 years of military service with the United States Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel. Throughout his life, he has played for such artists as Lou Rawls, The Chi-Lites, Ray Silkman, and Mr. Lee, on the Get Busy album. He has performed with bands Page 1 and Curry and Co. The author, Rev. Dr. McLuen has over 40 years of music experience in performing on the alto saxophone and as a music educator. He has studied with Dr. Eugene Rousseau, internationally renowned saxophonist and saxophone instructor at Indiana University and the University of Minnesota. In 1979, he performed at the World Saxophone Congress held in Chicago, Illinois. He has earned a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in 1973 at the University of Iowa. From 1978-1985, he served as an instructor and assistant Professor of woodwinds at Kentucky State University where he also taught ear training, sight singing and music appreciation. In 1981, the two authors started to orchestrate the now published, “The Complete Saxophone and Oboe Scales Book.” Finally, a project they started over twenty-nine years ago is now in the hands of a new generation.
