Background: Recent news highlights the decades-old scandal within the Catholic Church regarding a small percent of priests who sexually preyed on the young. The act of pedophilia is vile and distasteful, yet few association execs think they will every have to deal with such abhorrent behavior. We all realize that the act of pedophilia is neither restricted to one religion, one profession, or one culture, yet most of us are ill prepared to deal with such situations when they happen. Since this crisis is so visible within the Catholic Church, thanks to an ever curious media, we can observe and learn from the way the Church’s hierarchy handles such situations. The Situation: The year was 1977 and I had successfully managed three local Labor Day Telethons. Recruiting volunteers to man the pledge phones was never a problem . Turning down the throngs who signed up too late was always a disappointment. I guess many were looking for their 15 minutes of fame since the camera would always pan the volunteers manning the pledge phones.
