This is an anti-racism story about a black American Professor(Miles) that lectures mathematics at The University of North Carolina, who vindicated a white student, Daniel Vermin, against all odds, from a crime that was committed by a black student, George Martin. Seven years later, Vermin was involved in a plot by his Head of Department, to make the life of his black neighbor's son a misery. At the point climax of the plot, Vermin discovered to his greatest shock that the black boy in question is the son of Professor Miles. The plot had to be aborted, but time was not on his side.
