Step back in time and take the steam railway from Douglas to Port St Mary. A short walk from the station brings you to the beautiful bay and busy harbour of Port St Mary. It is your gateway to a dramatic coastline of rocky cliffs and coves and on to the crofters' settlement of Cregneash with its charming open air museum. This is a longer and more challenging walk than others in this book but it is extremely rewarding, with outstanding views to enjoy all the way. It is a beautiful and dramatic walk that starts along the island’s coastal path, the Raad ny Foillan (‘Way of the Gull’). It then skirts or crosses the Chasms, incredible rock fissures where extreme care is needed. Turning inland you will visit the Cregneash open air museum depicting a typical late nineteenth century crofters' village living off the land and sea. Returning to the coast, fantastic vistas open up of the south of the island, the west and east coast and even the highest mountain, Snaefell, in the north of the island. The walk gently follows a raised coastal walkway around the bay and harbour of Port St Mary to return up a slipway to the Albert Hotel, a pub where you might hear the Manx language spoken. It is recommended that a day is taken for this walk because it is up and down hill and around the rugged coastline. A refreshment break is possible in the cafe at Cregneash. You will need stout walking shoes and your binoculars for the outstanding views and birdlife.

Country walker, Ann Reeder, has been visiting the Isle of Man regularly since 1986, particularly to enjoy the coastal scenery, the hill walks, the heritage and the festivals. She has walked the coastal path in six days and has enjoyed many other footpaths including the Herring Way, the Millennium Way and the Heritage Trail. Ann has visited every site in the Story of Mann, has attended Tynwald Days and has taken several tour groups over to the island. She is a member of CAMRA.
