"In the lights from our headlamps minutes seemed like hours and we silently urged the time forward so that more of the work would be done and they would be nearer a breakthrough and rescue when all would be well. But the wait would not be hurried and we existed in limbo. Occasionally, we would be told what progress had been made, but always it seemed so little that we began to dread the next bulletin. It was all taking too long! In my imagination I played scenarios of what it was like beyond the fall: were they still alive, or only some of them? Were they injured or unable to move? Were their lamps holding out or were they existing in darkness? Was each one facing the torture of the slow drip, drip of water like a metronome ticking away their lives? Irreligious, indifferent, religious or agnostic, would they sing the hymns of burial or of defiance for the love of their voices? Could they breath? I cursed myself for having too much knowledge then grieved for the emptiness of Will's waiting. Then I appreciated the depth of his courage. He had never been underground before, never experienced such darkness or isolation, yet he was the more stoic of the two of us.

About the Book
The second in a series of novels named 'Ends & Means' is set in the University sector and considers the effect of matters beyond the control of individuals, on their responsibilities and behaviour. Disasters, man-made or otherwise have effects far beyond those immediately affected. The consequences ripple from the source with no regard to the limits of personal trauma. In October 1966 there was a tragedy in a small mining village in South Wales when a waste tip slid down the mountainside, engulfing a farmhouse, a primary school and a row of houses. 116 children and 28 adults were buried alive in a sea of slurry. No-one's life would ever be the same again.
About the Author
DB Lewis is an internationally published academic with a number of highly regarded research papers and textbooks in neurobiolgy. He has also published nonfiction set in the academic world he knows so well. The latter deal with issues of responsibility, power and privilege and the often difficult choices of behaviour that must be addressed.
