I was a terrified and timid little boy when my mother walked me to the parish home and gave me to the priest. It would be the priest’s responsibility to fulfill my mother’s dream of the ultimate sacrifice for the church. For the next eight years, instead of playing with the other children, I spent my free moments with the priest as he instructed me in the great privilege of serving God. My life became a meaningless struggle to try to please God.
In 1944, I was scheduled to report for the draft. My parish priest assured me that I had nothing to worry about and that I would be deferred because of religious reasons. Suddenly, a plan developed in my mind. By entering the military, I could be free to do whatever I pleased. When I was done sowing my wild oats, I could come back and do what God and my mother wanted me to do.
It was through the U.S.O. in Waco, Texas, that I met the Alexander family and my life changed forever.
