CHAPTER 8 - THE ACCOMPLICES
Scrambling to look for a safe hiding place, Jen pointed toward the farthest corner at the back of the loft. Scurrying as fast as they could, they reached the corner and huddled together, hardly breathing, waiting to hear the direction of the footsteps.
"Dumb nightdresses," Mac whispered, longing for a dark hoodie and jeans.
Holding their breath, they watched in horror as the doorknob clicked and slowly turned. One, two, three…
Mac started to swallow giggles, her hands pressed to her mouth. "Shh," breathed Jen, but Mac kept giggling. She could see what the rest of them couldn't. In crept the three lords, dressed in medieval sleeping tunics and sports socks to keep their feet warm.
"Well," said Warren, "I guess the secret of the third floor attracted Miladies, too."
"They're the nosy ones, Milord. They got here first," piped in James.
"Yuck, what's that smell?"
"Shh," Jen warned, "you'll wake up the ghost."
AYeah, right. The weeping girl won=t like us sneaking around up here,@ said Mac.
"What are you doing with flashlights?" asked Jen. AI thought we were supposed to be living in medieval times.@
Warren shrugged, "You didn't think we lords were really going to live by candlelight, did you? You ladies are such romantics."
Pointing to the end wall, Jen whispered, "Look at the initials on those trunks."
The boys tiptoed over to the trunks, cringing with each creaky floorboard. Not only were there initials, each trunk had a padlock.

Mayhem ensues, with students being held at gunpoint, getting lost in a maze garden, and a desperate chase through thick clouds of fog. The ultimate rescue will leave you breathless.
About the Author
During whimsical summer days of treating her young nieces to boat tours of the Thousand Islands, this story began to take shape. Susan ran many ideas by the children, all of which -- happily -- met with their approval.
