I had heard this story many times before and I excused myself and went to my room to pack my sea bag. I was scheduled to begin my two year tour of sea duty, shortly. I told my parents that I was off to report to the Philadelphia shipyards. I decided not tell them that I would be going by way of General Schneider’s house in Washington. I figured that if Emily and I did not seem glad to see each other, the disappointment to her father and mine would be less. I found myself gazing out of the coach window as the train pulled into Union Station. I pulled my sea bag onto my shoulder and stepped from the train. I found a cab and asked to be taken to the address that General Schneider had given me. We pulled up about a half hour later in front of a three story brownstone in Georgetown. I paid the driver and took my bag up the front steps. "What am I doing here? What if Tom Jr. and Emily are not home? I reached for the door knocker and let it fall a few times. "No one is home, not even a servant. I need to get to Philadelphia." I turned to go and the door opened. "James Caldwell, is that you?" Emily Schneider was standing in the doorway. "Your father wanted me to check on you and see if you and Tom needed anything. I am on my way to the Philadelphia Shipyards and it was right on the way.""You are the same poor liar, JJ. Washington is not on the way from Seneca Hill to Philadelphia. Why did you come here?""To see you, Emily." "That is better, come inside, Tom is home and will want to talk to you about the Naval Academy. I want to know what your future plans are JJ."I felt a large lump forming in my throat, so I did not respond. I grabbed my bag and walked into the Schneider home. I sat the bag down in the foyer in front of a center stairway and waited for Emily to tell me where her brother was. I turned and she had her arms around me hugging the breath out of me. My knees turned to jelly but my mouth met hers and I did not run away to the stables this time. "You two going to come up for air any time soon?" Her brother was smiling and extending his hand. I shook it as I kept Emily’s hand in my other hand. The electricity ran up and down my arm. This was definitely not the reaction that I got with my friend in Olso. I glanced sideways at Emily and said, "Emily said you were home and wanted to talk to me about Annapolis. I graduated with my degree but I will not get a commission until I finish my sea trials. So you will finish at Georgetown with your degree about the same time, right." "Yes, my major is business administration. I want to stay as far away from the military life as possible. Emily and I never saw our dad much, we were raised by our mother. I want a family where I see my children every night." We all walked into the parlor, Emily and I were still holding hands. We sat on a sofa and JR sat in a chair. JR continued, "I suppose dad told you to come and talk to me about my plans to get married at such a young age?" "JR, you will know when it is time to get married. My parents were almost 40 when they were married, that is why I am adopted. My youngest sister is not even in college and my parents are now 60. I do not want that for my family. I am planning on a military career as a hydrographic surveyor and starting my family before I am 25 years old. I just have to find the right woman who understands what military life is like, especially for someone who is mapping the ocean floor." "How about the one sitting beside you, JJ? She talks about you all the time." "We all three grew up together, JR. That is why she knows me so well. Your father says Emily has plenty of boy friends." "Hello, I am in the same room! And boy friends do not count, what about that Helga person in Norway?" She took her hand away and crossed her arms in front of her. "Do you want to spend the rest of your life with me, Emily?" "Do you want to spend your life with me, James Caldwell?" "Take a hold of my hand again. What do you feel?" "A tingling in my fingers that runs the whole way up my arm, why?" "I thought it was just me. What do you feel when we hug?" "Like my knees are going to collapse." "And when we kiss?" "Like my insides are going to melt." I looked at her and said, "The next time you talk to your father, ask him what I said about how I feel about you. I think he will tell you the same thing.""Hello, I am also in the same room!" JR was grinning.I turned to face JR and said, "How about a double wedding after I get back from my sea trails? What is your girl friends name anyway?""Naomi Blackford, and I can not wait two years for you to get back from the Mediterranean. We are going to get married before I graduate from Georgetown.""Okay, no double wedding then. Emily, I am on my way to the Port of Philadelphia to join the USS Quinnebaug, it sails for Europe in four days. Tomorrow lets go shopping for your engagement ring.""I think you better ask my father and mother for their blessing, James.""I already have.""What did they say?"

About the Book
Admiral's Son General's Daughter: is a continuation of the story begun in Admirals and Generals. This second book describes in vivid detail what may have occurred in the United States Military under the Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Harison, McKinley and Roosevelt Presidential administrations. The narration is by the son of a career naval officer, born in Beaufort, South Carolina. He will also serve in the Army Navy Building and the White House, Washington D.C. The historical events of 1877 through 1913 are carefully followed. The imagination of the author provides rich characters in powerful settings from the harbors of Alaska to the ports of the Balkan countries just prior to World War I. The time old love story between a man and a woman is woven throughout the book when the naval officer, marries the daughter of a general. They have four children, the oldest girl becomes a college professor, the oldest son enters the US Naval Academy, like his father and grandfather. The twins, a boy and a girl graduate from William and Mary and go on to law school in Washington D. C. Scenes are set carefully with attention to accurate research of the low country of South Carolina as well as our Nation's Capital circa 1877- 1913. The People's Standard History of the United States written by Edward S. Ellis and published in 1895 by Western Book Syndicate and copyrighted by the Woolfall Company have provided background materials, maps of the period and needed information on how the federal government was organized and functioned during this period of history.
