The elevator began to rise. Mordari secured the canopy, powered up the engine, and quickly ran through a checklist of the on-board flight systems. Captivity by the food creatures had not diminished her skills. She was Scout of the 44th Camp. One of the elite.
The upper hatch of the elevator opened, pushing the craft out on the launch platform. Mordari activated the thrusters, punched the power sequence with her claw, and the shokar jumped from the lunar surface. Below her was the Tranquility Colony. Two landing bays. A garage access. Maintenance buildings. The famous White Towers Museum. The long jagged cliffs called Tranquility Ridge ran north to the mineral rich crater Vitruvius that hovered on the port side. To the west, new structures were appearing at an astonishing pace, a vast expansion of the old settlement.
The curl has been busy, Mordari thought. It will avail him nothing.
The shokar accelerated through the vacuum, evaded a satellite without incident, and disappeared into deep space on a course for Jupiter. Mordari was free once more.
Watching from the communications deck atop Tranquility Ridge, Grey Waters and Kris Fairfield saw the alien ship disappear into the void. He had recently turned twenty-seven years old, of medium height and filled out from the skinny youngster Kris had first met in the summer of 2069. She was thirty-one with long silky black and vivid green eyes, a soldier by profession. Both were considered good-looking but not exceptionally so.
“Think she’ll know we let her escape?” Kris asked.
“In time the thought will occur to her,” Grey said, suppressing his feelings on the subject.
“You still haven’t said why you let her go.”
“She served her purpose,” he said, stepping back from the observation window overlooking the northern plains of Mare Tranquillitatis. Below them were the surface structures of the original colony. Mining roads reached to the horizons.

It’s now 2078, and the Arikhan fleet has finally arrived determined on conquest. Opposing them is Grey Waters, the young Governor-General of the United Alliance, and a rag-tag fleet of warships lacking the technology to challenge the invaders – but challenge them they must; from Jupiter space through the Asteroid Belt, on the red sands of Mars, and finally in the skies above Earth. The chances of defeating the Arikhan aren’t good, but if the price of victory is high, the brave youngsters rallied to the cause are willing to pay it.
About the Author
Greg Urbach was born in the San Fernando Valley, an oppressed province of the City of Los Angeles. After attending California State University Northridge for an Urban Studies degree, he embarked upon numerous careers, writing whenever he had the opportunity. In addition to the Waters of the Moon books, he has recently published his first fantasy novel, Magistrate of the Dark Land, and will soon publish a sequel to the Tranquility series, Slave of Akrona. He lives with his wife, Kwei-lin Lum, a paper doll artist who has also created several of the Tranquility book covers.
