Since having his latest discussion with Eddie, Henry’s emotions had become somewhat calloused toward other people’s feelings. As he stood and watched the farmer writhe in pain, he felt little or no compassion for the man. When Eddie returned to his victim, Henry found that although he had been correct about the mission, he had been wrong about the weapon. Eddie had recovered the gun that he had taken from the young man in Las Vegas, aimed it toward the man’s forehead, and said, “bye, bye.”
“Click.” The gun didn’t fire, and Eddie proceeded to pull the trigger several times. Each pull of the trigger was met with the same dull clicking sound. “Damn!” Eddie shouted, “Those kids were trying to rob us with an unloaded gun!” He threw the firearm deep into the woods, kicked the helpless farmer in the head, ran back to Old Red, and returned with the tire iron.
