The Future

A few years ago, in a column titled ‘Bringing down Kim Jong-Il,’ Dr. Ted Galen Carpenter, Vice President of the Defense and Foreign Policy at the famous Cato Research Center, strongly argued for a new plan to deal with North Korea’s nuclear. In this column, he stated, The US should request China’s help in overturning North Korea’s current regime in exchange for a termination of the ROK-US alliance and the withdrawal of US armed forces from South Korea.” Professor George Knife at Harvard University, a great scholar on the Korea and an expert on Northeast Asia, recently had an interview with a South Korean media outlet and in this interview, gave advice to the people of South Korea. Professor Knife predicted that if South Korea were to fall under China’s influences, China would take it over; if Korea were to fall into Japan’s sphere of influence, then Japan would maintain dominant power over it. Therefore, South Korea should seek more freedom by utilizing the US to restrain both China and Japan. According to his interview Professor Knife trusts that Korea will be unified. He also said that though there are some neighboring countries that will fight the US has always supported unification. He predicts that the chances of unification will increase only after Kim Jong-Il is out of the picture.
