August 8, 2008 (About 5 months earlier) She tied her long black hair and dabbed the silent tears that rolled down her cherubic cheeks. The dark rings around her eyes still existed, but the make-up made her seem as if she were only tired. Her stare became a hopeless glaze as the image that reflected a fake and forced smile began to fade. Her beautiful fair skin now resembled a purple and green shade. Her eyes never shined anymore, and her eyelids hung low and dreary. Her eyelashes were long and elegant, but only served as a distraction from her own vision. The lines across her wrist were perfect red parallel lines. After a long stare in the mirror she untied her hair and let it flow loosely around the bruises on her neck. She took the hair tie and rolled it onto her wrist. Much better, she thought to herself. As she made her way down the stairs she counted her steps. The ten steps that led directly into the living room were steep, so she cautiously held on to the railing. She wasn’t used to such steep steps. She wasn’t used to a living room that was filled with what seemed to be happy family portraits. She tried not to be jealous as she looked at the picture of the big happy family who smiled so freely. She was only going to be there for a few short weeks. The flood had ruined their basement at home and they were not allowed back in, so her mom sent her to stay with the Leyo’s.

These journeys carry them to places unimagined, as a source of love and happiness guides them into their futures, and teaches them to find a little bit of peace wherever they are.
About the Author
DARNELL DENZEL WILLIAMS, commonly known as Dee Dee to his family and friends, devotes his energy, understanding, and love to motivating and encouraging people, especially the youth. He currently attends Rutgers University—Camden and is involved with AmeriCorps, Boys and Girls Club of America, and is recognized throughout his community as a role model and peer leader. Born in March 1991, in Chicago, he currently resides in Lakehurst, NJ, and has been privileged to give more than 100 speeches to communities, churches, schools, and programs about life, love, respect, and self-esteem. He strives to bring out the best in others and looks forward to his future in Education. Darnell’s outgoing personality and friendliness makes him approachable, and his ability to empathize with others is the reason he is paving the way for many of those who cross his path.
