“This is the Emerald Star, please identify yourself, over”.
There was no response to the captain’s request.
“Try again”, Kurt said.
“This is the captain of the Emerald Star, submarine of our port side, please identify yourself, over”.
A sinister silence fell on the bridge, a submarine lying a few meters away without identifying itself had pushed the anxiety level to a heighten state of great concern.
There were no markings on the submarine, no identifying symbols to what nation it belonged to.
“I think I know what class that is”, the captain said.
He reached in a cupboard behind him, and pulled out a book of ‘world submarines’. “Let me see, I spent quite a lot of time with my head in this book on dark lonely nights”.
He flicked through a few pages, and then stopped at a page and held it up against the window. He casted his eyes to the submarine laying off their port side and then compared the picture with the real thing.
“Here, take a look at this, gentleman”. The captain pointed to the page decrypting ‘Russian submarines’.
Bob and Kurt lowered their heads around the map table.
The captain was pointing to a kilo class submarine.
“It looks like to me a Russian kilo class submarine, see the outline in the picture, it is exactly the same as this photo”.
The captain drew his finger along the writing alongside the picture of the submarine. “Kilos class are specially designed for anti-shipping operations in relatively shallow water, equipped with six 533 mm torpedo tubes and a crew of 52”.
All three men simultaneously lifted their heads up and gave a grave look at each other.

About the Author
Keith Austin was born in Kent, England. He grew up in London and went to work in the shipping industry in and around the East End where he learnt his trade. He now spends most of his time with his family at their home in Spain. The tranquil surroundings of their house in Andalusia has inspired Keith at last to put pen to paper and fulfil his passion of writing. His love for creating mystery and thrills along the way in his earlier career, set in some of the world's most exotic locations, has motivated him to write in such an exciting and adventurous fashion, together with a hint of humour. The main character, Kevin Sinclair, may well be the footprint of his own shadow.
