Day 18 – Woman in the Mirror
’Leave your country, your relatives, and your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you. I will cause you to become the father of a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and I will make you a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. Her name was Harmony, a word synonymous for peace, and the state of being she spent her life pursuing. In her childhood, she was hurt by people who should have protected her, so she built walls of defense around herself to ensure her vulnerability wouldn’t be exposed to the world again. The parent of one daughter, she determined to provide Missy all the things she herself had desired and never had growing up.
Missy excelled in her dance classes, made friends at summer camp and was envied for her designer wardrobe. She had everything Harmony was certain would have made a difference in her own life. For this reason, she was befuddled when Missy’s words and actions mirrored her own struggles with low self-worth and rejection. She questioned how history could repeat itself when Missy had never heard an angry voice or been on the receiving end of an adult’s physical outburst.
God promised Abram that the generations that followed him would be blessed, but there was a caveat. Abram had to leave the familiar and trust God into the unknown. God didn’t even give him a roadmap. He only said, “I will show you.”
A detail that escaped Harmony was God’s plan for her own life.
It is not selfish to put the restoration of our own soul before another’s. In order to leave an inheritance for the next generation, we must pursue wholeness. We must take the risks involved in leaving the familiar places we’ve known and have established ourselves, if God calls us away from them. About the Book
Life’s speed bumps and collisions form who we are. Some days it might be a dozen eggs crashing onto the kitchen floor, a loved one making a surly face, or the loss of a home or a life partner. We can be left with tire tracks on our back from being run over by life or have God leave a distinct fingerprint on our heart. While God isn’t the source of injury and tragedy, He will use it to leave us equipped for His purpose.
About the Author
Yvonne Villarreal Sánchez earned a Master’s of Education at Texas A&M University at Kingsville. She has been an elementary school teacher for about 25 years. Yvonne has directed stage productions around Central and South Texas for about 25 years in conjunction with teaching acting classes. More recently, she has written and directed three and is currently writing a fourth original play script to be produced and directed in December 2010. Also, she has been a certified Christian counselor for six-plus years.
She and her husband, Dr. Armando Sánchez, are the parents of three grown children – Kala, Karah, and Kristian. She and Armando also are Papa and Mimi to one granddaughter, Ava, daughter of Kala and Eric. If she could, she would live on the beach 24/7, especially enjoying the beautiful beach sunrises.
