"Are you crazy, Michel? We're going to get caught!"
"Shush… (Michel hissed through clenched teeth!) We will, if you keep crying like a wounded rabbit!"
"I'm not a “rabbit”!" Billy replied in a harsh whisper. "I said I ain't a rabbit, Michel!" Billy snapped and grabbed his arm as Michel started to turn away.
"All right, then, you ain't a rabbit!" Michel said as he removed his friend's hand. "Then shut up and let's do this!"
"There'll be hell to pay if we get caught, you know that!" Billy told him again. "Whose going to know?" Michel whispered back. "Anyway the Hawk clan's honor is at stake!" Michel snapped. "All those little Turtle punks over there think we don't have the stones to do this and then they said so out loud and in front of everyone! Now, are you going to help me get those hairs or not? If so, then keep watch! If not, then go away, Mr. Rabbit."
"I already told you I ain't no Rabbit, Michel," Billy said and lifted the edge of the tent's side. "But we're still going to get caught!"
"Would you just shut up?" Michel snapped, "I'm tired of hearing it!" Then he ducked his head under the edge of the lifted tent and disappeared into the darkened interior. He paused for a moment to let his eyes adjust to the darkness and to calm his heart down a little (it had nothing to do with being scared to death). Then he set off to get those stupid hairs. He wasn't sure how he had gotten into this mess in the first place, but he was going to make the little punks choke on their words. "No stones, indeed."
"Get a few hairs from the ones that haven't been separated yet and get back out fast," Billy hissed under the tent flap.
"Shush… I know that …" Michel whispered harshly back as he stepped over several boxes of kittens to get to the back wall where the younger ones were kept until it was time for their eyes to open.
All he needed was a couple of hairs. He could be in and gone in just a few minutes and, with any luck, be back to the youth gathering area before the drinking began. He pulled his knife out of his boot sheath and slid the blade under the back edge of one of the crates and tried to pry up the lid, but the stupid thing seemed to be stuck. So he pushed a little harder and with a protesting screech, it popped up so quickly that he almost dropped his knife on the floor.
His heart was now pounding so hard in his chest that he was sure if someone hadn't heard that damn lid come loose, they would surely be able hear his heart pounding from across the court and then come bursting through the door any second. He caught the back edge of the lid with one hand, then paused a moment more to listen for the sounds of anyone coming, but no one came running. There were no new sounds except for the loud beating of his heart and the very loud sound of his own breathing.
"Hurry up, Michel!"
Michel almost jumped out of his skin and nearly screamed with fright at the sudden sound of Billy's whispered voice from the other side of the room… He had to swallow three or four times to get his heart back into place before he could whisper back. "Shut up, you idiot." Michel said trying not to sound like he had just been scared senseless. He listened again briefly and then levered the lid the rest of the way up. He looked once more at the inner doorway then looked inside… As he peeked under the lid to see where they were at, a small pair of very large luminous yellow green eyes peeked back out at him. There was a sudden sharp physical shock and his heart lurched sidewise in his chest as their eyes locked momentarily… "No… No, No…" Michel breathed out, totally trying to deny what had just happened between them. "No, you can't!"
"I can't!"
"We can't!"
"This isn't supposed to happen. No… you need to stay in there," he said in a panicked whisper and pushed her gently back into the box and closed the lid! He turned around quickly and stumbled into, then fell over, the nearest box. He landed in a breath-blasting belly flop squarely at Billy's feet. His breath was gone, but he was so totally freaked out that he scrambled on his hands and knees in a panicked rush out and under the tent side and into the darkness beyond.
"Shit Michel, wait up!" Billy said in a harsh whisper as he caught up to him a few moments later. "Did you get the hairs? Let me see . . ." Billy's voice ran out of steam as he saw his friend's face…
Michel's face was bleach white and he was shaking from head to toe and was leaning up against a tree, trying to get his breath back and to calm his mind. "What was he going to do…?”
"What just happened in there?" Billy asked and then his eyes went wide and his mouth fell open. "Oh no…! No you didn't! No… Tell me I'm crazy and that I am just being a rabbit. Michel? Michel… tell me you didn't just do what I think you just did… Oh shit… OH Shit… Oh Holly Shit! You just bonded with that Da'Gat didn't you?" Michel's eyes slowly rose to meet Billy's! "Oh, holly Shit! We're so screwed! I told you something bad was going to happen. Shit, what are we going to do now
