Statement from the Author
We were young and naive of the problems of the world, but had everything in common. I would like to say I could tell you what day it was, or what the big news stories of the day were, but some memories have escaped me. On the other hand, some memories will never escape, whether I become old and brittle or forget my name forever.
Chapter 1
“Panic”
The sound of screeching tires…..
A flash of light….
A loud noise….then a scream…
Holly what happened?
Hollyyyyy!
Rick felt as if could barely wake up. He felt the pressure of the steering column on his chest pressing in making it hard to breathe.
Barely audible, unable to take a deep breath, he faintly asked “Are you Okay?”
He could hear crying, sirens, yelling all around. The smell of burning plastic, rubber, smoke and brakes was heavy in the air.
Rick could hear a man yelling at him…“Sir, are you ok? Sir, are you hurt? We will get you out, hang in there, Sir!”
Fading in and out of consciousness he tried to look over at the passenger seat to see if she was there but his eyes couldn’t see anything. The warm sensation of liquid rolled off his brow and covered his eyes.
The next thing Rick saw was the ceiling of a van and two men looking down at him.
He could over hear one of the men talking on a CB giving a description of someone.
“This is emergency transport 7243, we have an ETA of about 10 minutes. We have a white male, approximately thirty to thirty five years of age, weighing approximately 170 lbs. Patient is conscious and disoriented with only spontaneous eye opening upon verbal command. Patient was involved in a two vehicle collision where patient was knocked unconscious for an unknown amount of time and was assisted by fire and police personnel at the scene who extracted him from the vehicle. Patient was placed in a C-spine as a precaution and upon receiving the patient he had a bandaged laceration on his forehead and lower left extremities. He also has an abrasion to his upper thigh on his left leg as well as his right arm. IV’s have been established. Vital signs are as follows BP 130 over 84, heart rate 92 and regular. Respiratory at 16 non wavered, initial 02 stat at 95% real air.
Listening to the description Rick tried to make sense of what was going on.
Over and over he asked himself, “What happened, where am I…. what am I doing here?”
The sound of sirens was blaring, almost deafening, but he still had trouble figuring out where he was.
“Is Holly ok, is she alright?” Rick yelled trying to look for her all around the small space of the van.
“Sir, do you know your name?”
“Yes….my name is Rick Berry,….where is Holly?
“Hi Rick, my name is Jeff, you have been involved in an automobile accident and we are transporting you to a hospital.”
Disoriented and in pain Rick struggled with the reality of what happened. His mind couldn’t focus and absorb that he was in an ambulance. Trying to look around, to get his bearings, was difficult as one of his eyes was swollen shut.
He tried to make sense of everything. He was confused, in pain, and wondering what was happening
