why I sit tight in Mesquite, NV because it's new. no real past. only yesterday. a few public buildings with plaques still shiny. no foundation. just make it up as you go along. after all these years I'm game for that. fast food, a Marlboro & a cup of bashful coffee... sitting on an unmade bed, the TV mute, I await orders.

"She dropped me in the middle of nowhere & other poems by geoff peterson" represents Peterson at his most stoic. Written over 30 years, these desert "junk" poems--spare, sparsely populated--appear as flinty talismans in memory. Many poems are notational, that is, dashed off while driving at speeds in excess of remorse. Consistent with the land form is the the contour of the poet's own solitude--sculpted, weather-beaten & rounded at the edges. It is a work with the maturity of hard miles and sunsets to last a lifetime.

geoff peterson has traveled & lived over much of this country, most recently on his "Sunset" tour of the Southwest while making a case for his next appearance in print. sometimes you've got to conjure the people from yr past to recognize the landform as the true contour of your inner life. some men only feel better when they can see for miles. it's one way of keeping the bastards off the perimeter. what is it that you want, asked the gypsy woman from a past life. it's love, right? say it: I want love. now that wasn't so hard, was it? now wash that boiling oil off yr flesh and sit down.
