When Jess didn't return to their room right away, Erin began to worry; she went to the balcony and when she looked down the beach, she saw a solitary blond running with a dark cap on. Erin heard the key first, then the door swung open as Jess ran into the room. When she did, Erin was shocked to see her face was chalk-white. Her blue eyes were enormous as she collapsed on her bed.
"What's wrong, Jess?" Erin asked quickly.
"It's that obvious, huh?"
"Yes. What happened to you?"
"I just saw some man kill another one!"
"What? You saw someone killed?"
:"Oh, yes...out on the beach just now!"
"Did that man see you?"
"We were at the second pier; he had to see me when I took off running; he yelled out but I didn't slow down or turn around. He sounded so mean and agnry so I just ran; I've never been so afraid."
"My goodness, Jess; you could have been killed also."
"You're not telling me anything I don't allready know. I don't know when IU'll run out on the beach at night by myself again."
"Calm down; I'll get you some water. Tell me again what you saw."
Jess drank the water and repeated her story.
"Yout have to report this to the police!"
"Oh, no, Erin; I can't do that!"
"Honey, you were an eye-witness to a horrible crime! You actually saw a man commit murder tonight; you have to report it."
"But I can't identify him, Erin. I never saw his face. I only saw that horrible tattoo on othe inside of his arm. If I report this to the authorities, they will not let me get on the cruise ship tomorrow; they'll keep me here in Charleston. I have to go.:"
