Holding the bolt of the Intourim, Chadler delivered a surge of his energy, causing a long streak of light to shoot outward from the apex of the artifact. A dark point formed in mid-air, while multicolored lights curved into a tight circle, forming the vortex. Within a few minutes, the whirling light reached large proportions, and they could feel the wind being generated. The horses whinnied in apprehension, pulling on the reins, so Mira delivered more messages to placate them. Brandon took complete control of Kadier, while Kipwing perched bravely on his arm, awaiting instructions. Before the wind became too fierce, the Captain sent his hawk through, telling him to wait for them on the other side. The vortex whirled ever larger, moving towards them with unrelenting force. Brandon glanced over his left shoulder to Mira, noting that she kept Balthasar in line and standing ready. He gave her a nod and silently told her to remain calm in the transfer. Tulvin and Toskar waited, composed, as though they were at a traffic light, biding their time for the change to green. But this was not the case for Bearcloud who decided that he wanted no part of this whirling mass of wind that threatened to swallow him whole. He reared up and whinnied a complaint to his rider. Being a great horseman, Neil kept his balance in the saddle, but the agitated horse refused to yield to his commands. The vortex was now upon Brandon and Kadier, surrounding them. The bright, whirling vortex advanced towards Mira and Balthasar. She patted the neck of her horse, sending him picture messages to remain calm. Craig watched closely, now understanding the meaning and the situation of what had formerly been nightmares to him. He no longer felt afraid. Before she was consumed by the vortex, Mira turned her head to look at Craig, concerned that he’d be frightened. He waved goodbye to her, and then, she and Balthasar disappeared. Tulvin and Toskar were well within the portal, while Neil continued to struggle with Bearcloud. Max anxiously watched the dramatic clash of wills between horse and rider, knowing that, unless the horse could be calmed down, entry into the other realm would be dangerous, if not impossible. In a fit of frustration, Neil jumped off from his horse, and grabbed his saddlebag, to stand ready within the portal zone. Max could see that the vortex was on the verge of collapsing as it radiated intermittent light and reduced its whirling mass in size. Knowing his brother’s unrelenting intentions to be with Mira, he realized that Neil intended to throw himself into the vortex if it failed to surround him. Max jumped from his own horse and ran near to take hold of his arm. “Don’t do it, Neil!” he shouted in the midst of the powerful wind that whirled just inches from his face. “Let go of me!” demanded Neil, jerking his arm away. During the struggle of wills between his two brothers, Craig watched the portal. He discerned a dark form that appeared in the very center. He moved his horse closer to get a better view. This apparition appeared to be the same as what he’d witnessed before. The face of a boy within the vortex smiled. He gave a satisfied nod of his head. Then, the shadowy form turned away and vanished into the swirling light. The portal collapsed, the wind ceased, and Craig calmly turned his horse away from the area.

About the Author
S. D. Verlindau has written and published poetry over the past two decades. Her works include, 'China Clipper', 'Eye of the Turtle', 'The Mermaid', 'Heavenly Rapture', 'The Ancient Ones', Timeless Existence', and many others. Her varied interests are evident in that her subject reflects descriptive imagery of the sea, of nature and animals, astrology, ancient history, and archaeology. Verlindau's more recent interests includes songwriting of which the lyrics are written in her latest books collectively entitled, Knights of Excelter. Verlindau's stories and imagination are inspired by her unique life experience, an interest in ancient cultures, her travels, her love of animals, and even her dreams. She reveals that her dreams often find their place within the pages of her books. She says, "One morning, I awoke from a dream where a wagon was being hauled across a deep, wide river by horses. These horses went underwater to get to the other side. Inspired, I promptly added Gomtrellia's water-horses to my second book, 'The Dimension Equation'." "In my first book, 'The Intourim Affair', Mira's dream about horses transforming into dolphins was actually my own dream. I wanted to share that with my readers!
