He stared out into the drops then glanced back at his watch,8.30pm, and still no Brenda.That was odd,she usually showed by 8.15.
He glanced at his watch again,an eternally anxious few minutes later,8.33.He was starting to panic.He flipped open his mobile phone. No calls, no emails.
He was just standing,wondering what to do,when suddenly the home phone rang."Aaarrgghh!"He almost jumped.The shrill of the ring felt like gunshots,rocketing him from his brood.
"Yeah,he said rudely,wondering if it was the call he may have been subconsciously dreading. Nervously anticipating,from an over active,bored,overblown,Friday evening imagination.
"Jack McClusky?" piped an unknown, unfamiliar enquiring voice.
"Yes, he said flatly,holding his breath,and trying to place the voice in some context, had he heard it before? He was sure he hadn't.
"Sergeant Jim Travers, Christchurch Police, I'm afraid I've some bad news for you..."
