George Washinton camped with the Continental Army at Brooklyn Heights, Long Island, in August 1776. Thousands of British and Hessian soldiers surrounded the Americans. Many British ships waited in New York Harbor blocking their escape. But sailors from Marblehead, Massachusetts were gathering their small boats secretly on the East River. They wrapped their oars with cloth. The sailors began, on August 29, to ferry soldiers across the East River to Manhattan as the sun set. The evening was stormy and progress slow, but at midnight the waters became calm. Then the sailors rowed back and forth fast, finishing safely under a thick fog at dawn. The British, stunned over the escape, crossed the East River and invaded at Kips Bay, but the Americans retreated north. The Continental Army was saved.

Margaret Whitaker has taught elementary school for many years.
