About the Book

My Barney

Barney, my little friend lies here Complete in all save breath.

He’s just the same as yesterday,

His little face, so calm in sleep.

But, Oh! That change!

Which all of us so dread,

With tearful eyes I stand, I gaze,

He can’t be dead!

He sleeps.

Soon he will awake and lick my hand.

I know that he will be with me today.

He’ll run about the yard.

He’ll chase his cats and play.

He’ll leap into my arms to snuggle down.

He’ll breathe a sigh, content.

My little Barney is not dead.

Such gentle souls forever live,

In boundless measure of the tender love

They, forever give.

XXX

“My little Barney, my ’ Little Min-Pin’ was struck down in my driveway by a speeding pickup truck.

Ten and one-half years we lived in love together.”

About the Author

The story of Barney is true in every detail. Cal was raised on a small cattle ranch in south eastern Idaho. He is eighty-five years old. During the “great depression” a good cow sold for $10.00 and a new Ford car could be bought for as little as $295.00. A self starter and rims that could be changed cost $80.00 extra. (I have colored add posters.) Good men hired out for $1.00 per day. At age ten, Cal could ride any bronco horse with only a thin rope about ten feet long and handful of the horse’s mane. At age seventeen, Cal joined the Cadet Pilot Training Program (USAAF) January 1944. He spent three years, then attended college on that wonderful G.I. Bill. He was first in his family to attend college. His father counseled him to “Forget this nonsense and get an honest job.” My Barney’s Story is illustrated by a wonderful little lady who was raised in the remote interior of Alaska. She and Cal both learned to love animals at a very early age. Cal has been married to the same little girl for 66 ½ years. At age 85, he is still very busy cutting stone monuments. He has been commissioned by Wyoming Historical Society. We thank everyone who has helped make this publication possible.
