Albert didn't say anything. He didn't have to. He reached back with his free arm, urging Pepper to back up.
Side by side, they started backing slowly. Albert kept his light focused on the closed door.
Before they reached the head of the stairs, the doorknob turned, and the door slowly opened inward.
From their angled position, they couldn't see inside the room. What came out was another low growl, deeper, more menacing, than the first. It was followed by the sound of nails, or claws, clicking on a hardwood floor.
Albert, seeing Pepper frozen with fear, made a quick decision. He ducked around behind her and grabbed the knob of the door to the storage room.
An animal padded slowly from the far room. It stood facing them, two yellow eyes blinking into the light, ears up, snout slightly lifted to sniff the air. It bared its fangs.
Albert and Pepper gasped as they stood face to face with a huge, black wolf.
