That night it was particularly difficult for the young boy to settle. he was now in unfamiliar territory. A new house that didn't have a homely feel to it. Not for him. The general ambience of his aunt and uncle's house was not conducive to a good nights sleep. It had a profound feeling of creepiness about it, mainly due to the slightly Gothic feel of the house. All the original Victorian features had been maintained by his aunt. For some reason she had a particular passion for the period. The bedroom was making itself known to the boy by making creaking noises that came from the old wooden floorboards. Every time they made a noise the boy thought they were getting louder. Every noise of the house was being amplified in his head. He knew he was unlikely to get much sleep tonight. A few hours passed and he managed to doze off a couple of times. It was now two in the morning and he was wide awake. The wind had picked up and was chattering by the windows edge. The wind seemed to be saying something. He thought he heard his name being called softly. A few minutes later the wind picked up again and this time he could definitely hear his name being called. Reluctantly he decided to get up out of his bed to investigate. He moved cautiously towards the door, grabbed the old brass handle, turned it and moved into darkness of the landing. A Sudden a flash of lightning followed by the inevitable rumble of thunder blasted through the air. Then another. As the room lit up the boy for a split second saw a figure move in between the light. He thought the storm was playing tricks on him. The hairs rose on the back of his neck. Momentarily he was frightened witless. Maybe his imagination had taken hold was his immediate thought. At the top of the stair case loomed a dark figure it moved closer slowly materializing out of the darkness. The figure was becoming strangely familiar to him. Until as it approached nearer he felt a genuine feeling of serenity. His mother had returned. Although alone in the darkness, he was no longer afraid. His mother appeared happy and she looked the way she did before the cancer had ravaged her body. She drifted closer towards and spoke to him “Don't worry dear, everything will be fine. I will always be here to protect you. There are many things outside the domain of the real world that are influencing us sometimes with a vicious malevolence”. “Remember, I will always be there for you.” His mother disappeared almost immediately. The shock of her manifestation spun throughout his body. A slow trickle of urine soaked his underwear until it it flowed on to the floor. He gave a small yell which awoke his aunt. She walked towards him and said. “Don't worry It's the shock of today's events. It's enough to stress anyone let alone a young boy”. “I'm not afraid anymore I just saw mum. She promised to look after me when ever I'm in trouble”. From that day on neither the boy or his aunt ever spoke of what happened that night.

He interviewed several patients who had NDEs and, with the help of the hospital, managed to gain a research grant. The ultimate plan was to raise the profile of the hospital. During his research, he discovered that two of his patients (during their near-death experiences) were confronted by the ghost of a troubled girl seeking help to right a wrong. This opened up a dangerous mystery involving events from the hospital’s grim past. About the Author
Robert C. Martin lives in Llandaff, Wales, in the United Kingdom. He is married with two teenage sons. He has written fiction since he was a teenager and always wanted to be an author – mainly because of his interest in the paranormal. Now that his family is grown, he has decided that it is the ideal time to fulfil his ambition. The idea for the Perfect Host occurred when he visited a reputedly haunted Victorian hotel. It was there that he experienced his first paranormal encounter: he saw the ghost of a young child. This encounter rekindled his interest in writing.
