About the Book

Doug is a tree who is fifty years old and over eighty feet tall. He has spent all of his life in a Christmas tree farm, surrounded by other trees that he calls friends. One day, however, a man named Dave arrives, and things change for Doug. He is cut down and tied to a big truck, and so his journey begins.

Doug passes through deserts and through cities made of cement. He wonders where all the trees have gone, and he fears being made into firewood. But Dave takes him to New York City, where they set him up straight and cover him in twinkling Christmas lights. As he stands there, he wonders why the humans seem so very sad in New York.

This is the first Christmas since the tragedy of 9/11. So many lives were lost, and people have not had time to heal. Some think Christmas will never be the same. Can Doug bring the Christmas spirit back to a broken people and help to heal their hearts? The magic of a Christmas tree can spread far and wide, and with Doug’s help, maybe Christmas can be joyful again.

About the Author

Michael Pascoe studied graphic design at the College of Southern Nevada. His work has previously been published in the magic magazine Genii; he has also written and designed layouts for other newspapers and magazines. He currently lives in Nevada.

"This illustrious and very meaningful book takes us through the life of a pine tree who has lived among the other trees in his forrest family, but has seen so much more, and towers above them in his stature. He is used to the quiet life he has, and curiously takes note of a man arriving to look and touch .... just him, like he is special somehow. He is carefully loaded up for a adventurous journey across the United States, having no idea where he is going. He is gently placed in Rockefeller Center, as he comes upon the gaze of a little boy who had just lost his father to the September 11th attack on America. The tree realizes it's purpose when the boy and his mother come upon a part of their own healing while facing their very first Christmas without their loved one. A classic and treasured story, one that we have a common but unending human bond to, as we encountered this 9/11 this tragedy together, and find our healing in different ways. I would highly recommend this book, and find the illustrations an amazing work unto themselves. Consider giving as a holiday gift you can feel proud of ~"

The Six Trait Writing Model is a preferred writing education tool among today?s teachers. This book displays ideas and content. I enjoyed the distinctive way that the author has the Christmas tree explain his own story.

This is a great example of the use of voice. This book will present a model for teachers to instruct voice to get them better prepared for the state writing assessment. It is inventive and a unique way of displaying a true three dimensional character who displays sadness and at the same time joy.
