Boy Jesus in the Temple Luke 2:41-52 English Standard Version “Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, `Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.' And he said to them, `Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?' And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” Parents, Deacons, Ministers, Pastors, etc., should recognize the gifts within children. Many times we may discount something a child is telling us or trying to tell us as foolishness, but if we open our ears to hear, they may truly have something tangible to say. When Jesus was 12 years old He astonished the teachers of the Law and anyone within ear shot of Him. Our children are baptized in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit just as we are and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This means that the same Spirit we received is operating within our children and they must be heard. In Psalm 8:2 God informed us, “Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger” (ESV). Jesus reaffirms this when He is talking, once again, to the teachers of the Law and chief priests after clearing the temple courts. They say to Jesus, “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, from the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise” (Matthew 21:16 ESV)? The children were shouting “Hosanna to the Son of David” (Matthew 21:6 ESV)! Jesus was telling them to listen to the children and take heed. Of course, it was not God's will for them to listen to the children then because God hardened their hearts so His plan would be fulfilled as written in the Scriptures. However, what is stopping us now from listening to what they have to say? Read, listen, and take heed to what they are saying!

Children worship and praise the same God we do as our Lord is actively present in all our lives. Our children's hearts are also geared toward honoring Him. As parents, guardians, and family members, understanding that the Christian Discipleship process begins at home, we must empower and encourage our children, God's children, to seek our Lords face, connect with His heart and pursue His guidance. Children's ideas are very relevant and we must remind them that they can accomplish anything in Christ who strengthens them (Philippians 4:13). Luke 18:16 states, “But Jesus called the children to him and said, `Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (NIV). The Children of the Christian Mission of Panama are using the power of God's words to share spiritual knowledge expressing their love for God! This book encourages children to use their God-given gifts, talents and ideas to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel. As you read this book, invite the Lord into your heart. Ask Him to minister to you in a very special way. Consider the ways of the children…Can we benefit from their expertise and examples? Always remember, God can use a child to accomplish His will and purpose in your life. Jesus did… “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9, NIV).
About the Author
Shawn and Caroline Savage are ordained Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and retired veterans of the United States Air Force. As ordained ministers, Shawn and Caroline believe that Christian discipleship process is an ongoing journey to the route of salvation. They believe that everyone should become Ambassadors for Christ Jesus to minister the Good News of the Gospel as specified in the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-21. Using the power of God's words to build each other up enhances processes in striving to pursue our Lord's will. God will forgive us of our transgressions when we ask and give Him thanksgiving. Shawn's educational background consists of a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Arts in Theological Studies at Liberty University. Caroline's educational background consists of a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, MBA in Human Resources Management, and currently pursuing a Doctor of Management.
