The Vast Empire

The year was 1890 and Jacob and Emma Schied were migrating from Germany to America. There were 500 Germans also going to America. When they reached the United States they continued on to Michigan. They took horse and buggy to Reese near Saginaw in Michigan. It was a small town and Jacob had only $35.00 in his pocket. After two years they decided to go to Beal City, Michigan. They heard it was a good farming community with rich black soil. They all saved up money while they were in Reese and started out for Beal City with much enthusiasm. It took two days to get there by horse and buggy. Jacob and Emma bought a forty acre farm with a small one bedroom clapboard house. There was a big red barn, tool shed, chicken coop, granary, corn crib and pig shed on the property. They were all very happy and excited. from "The Vast Empire"
