My Big Backyard Journal…and beyond

When you take the time to pay a little attention to what is all around us, you may be a little surprised. That is what I found, during a few early spring coffee breaks, on our backyard deck. This became the inspiration for what lies before you. "My Big Backyard Journal...and beyond" is all about taking that extra minute, and paying attention to what is happening in the trees and bushes in our own backyards. As we looked for photo opportunities, I was totally surprised at everything our backyard had to offer. Nature is everywhere, and it is everywhere for all of us to enjoy. Along with the photographs of our animal and bird friends, you will be able to read a small poetic introduction. I am hoping that they will help you entertain your children, putting a smile on their face and maybe even your own. Putting this altogether over this past year, has given me many enjoyable moments, and the idea of this book is to pass the enjoyment on to all that partake.

About the Book
Nature has provided us with an array of birds, insects and animals, all laying claim to our big backyard environment. Everytime I see a butterfly flutter by, or a cardinal sitting so boldly in the old oak, I look for my camera to see how I could capture the excitement of the moment. At times these moments were popping up everywhere, and my camera and I were working so hard not to miss one opportunity. The idea was to create a book, as a Christmas gift, for my grandsons. As the idea was nearing completion, a number of family and friends showed some interest in the outcome, hus the addition of phase two of this venture. It was suggested that I go one step further and publish the book, to share with all the children. I never thought of myself as an author, but as the seed was planted, and began to grow, I was more than happy to keep it nurtured. In the end we were able to see a book, that was both entertaining and educational. I find that the reality of photography, is perhaps the next best thing to nature itself. For many children, and some adults, some of these photos may be the closest encounter they may ever have with some of these birds and animals.The opportunity is now here in "My Big Backyard Journal...and beyond". As you look through these pages, it is my hope that it brings you as much enjoyment, as I have had putting this together.
About the Author
The year was 1953, and the population of the town of Owen Sound, Ontario was about to grow by one. It was the exciting 50's but Owen Sound still held onto the quaint rural Ontario ideals. By the age of seven we became a family on the move, spending a few years in Sault Ste. Marie, then London, Fort William, and Belleville. Ontario is a very diverse province, and thanks to my fathers employer, we got to witness much of Ontario's beauty, first hand. After completing my Environmental Studies degree, at the University of Waterloo, I took to the working world. Soon after came the typical events, like marriage and children. If someone ever tells you that your children will grow up too fast, don't argue. It seemed like no time had past, and I became a grandfather. It's papa to the boys, of which there are seven in total. We love them all, and that's why the idea of writing children's books came into the light. A simple entertaining and educational idea, that started in our own backyard and grew to bookshelves everywhere. (everyone can have a dream) As I share my journey, I hope it brings to you the enjoyment I found in creating "My Big Backyard Journal...and beyond".
