“Watering the Flowers” It’s a hot summer day. I’m watching Poppa water the flowers. “Poppa, I want to do that” What else needs water, Liney? You do, Poppa! I aim the shower at him. He jumps! “Liney,” he laughs. “That’s cold!” We go into the kitchen. I’m sopping wet. He’s drenched. Water drips off us, hitting the floor. Grandma walks in the kitchen. “No Bath, Poppa” There is pasta on my face, in my hair, on the floor. I have a pasta mustache, a pasta beard, and pasta-caked fingers and hands. “Liney,” Poppa says “it’s bath time. I need to wash your hair.” “But Poppa, I don’t need a bath and the shampoo hurts my eyes.” I’m now in the ocean. The waves are high; the water’s rough. I see a giant pirate ship sailing towards us. “TURN BACK NOW!” I shout. Poppa reaches for the shampoo. “Nooo, Poppa, shampoo burns my eyes.” I grab a black washcloth and cover my eyes. “No, No, No,” I plead again.

About the Book
Liney is a very active, mischievous four-year-old boy from Brooklyn who loves making even routine tasks fun. Two stories highlight the joys of childhood in this fast-paced book. In the first story, a pasta-covered Liney refuses to take a bath and have his hair washed until Poppa tells him that if he doesn’t, he won’t be able to receive a special surprise. When Liney climbs into the bathtub, he finds himself in rough ocean waters with a pirate ship bearing down on him. As Liney fights for his crew, Poppa goes about giving him his bath and shampoo – and cheering his efforts. In the second story, Liney wants to join Poppa watering the flowers, and he learns to make different sprays with the hose. When he surprises Poppa by starting a water fight, a “no holds barred, winner take all” battle ensues! You’ll laugh out loud as you read the stories, which are combined with wonderful pictures that show how much fun childhood can be when it’s packed with the love and adventure of two strong-willed, unforgettable characters.
About the Author
Dennis Magid grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Indiana University and a Master of Public Health from Yale. He was President and CEO of a large geriatric complex and teaching center for thirty years before becoming an author of children’s books. He lives in Easton, Connecticut.
