Noticing a deck of playing cards on a table below the framed calligraphy, Jack recalled an invaluable life lesson taught to him by his father. He vividly remembered the day when he was fourteen years old that his father taught him the game of blackjack. After teaching the rules and dealing a few hands, his father shared an unforgettable insight with him. Dad taught me something of importance, Jack recollected. He took a break from teaching me the literal game of blackjack, and spoke of a figurative, applied blackjack. He told me, “If the ace of diamonds is the only card in your hand, you'll indeed be dealt a queen. This could at first appear to be a victorious pair. However, the queen will forever be facedown. You will never know what suits her, diamonds or a loving heart. Try to embody the ace of hearts, become a master in the ways of affection. Once an aura of benevolence surrounds you, many queens will present themselves. If you can become an ace of hearts, each girl will be transparent like a watch crystal. Softly grasp her small hand with your big hand, then sense if she speeds up or slows down. Break your connection with her if she fails to stay synchronized with you. If she accelerates, she needs to control you. If she falls behind, she needs you to control her. If she keeps pace with you, she is in search of a relationship based on mutual trust and understanding --a balanced relationship which bears the dual luxuries of passion and companionship. Together, an ace and a queen of hearts share a twenty-one year old spirit as long as they live. If you lose your way, just remember the clockwork of blackjack.”
