A Story of Downfall and Victory This is a story of hope and triumph based on true life happenings. Some facts are true and others imagined. It is a story of how Alice, just nineteen, committed crime, was punished, forgiven and became whole again. This book mainly reflects the experience of Alice who was immersed into the black hole of sexual abuse, prostitution, inflamed love, alcohol, drugs, crime and punishment. She was sent to prison for many years. Alice could be anyone of us and anyone of the women whose lives the author has studied, to bring this story to light. Shackled for life we thought, but Alice moved from black hell to green paradise. For the real sense of the story, one has to see from near, the effects of good times lost when melancholy and desires fly across the silent corridors where the screams for the want of life die beyond the iron bars, moving the underground roots of humanity that gives body to sentiments incarcerated. It is a process only understood if the self was broken down and put to a hard test of submission, compelling a person to live a life entrapped in the misery of guilt and broken dreams. It is from this point where the reconstruction of dignity begins. The lesson is very clear that only God can turn a mess into a message, a test into testimony, a trial into a triumph and a victim to victory. The main lesson we can learn from this immense human experience, is the recovery which is made possible with the help of all, the main player being the self, the courage and the will to overcome the bad and the trust and faith that the broken self places in God and her caretakers. It takes courage to bare yourself before the court and take the punishment in the way it is going to be revealed in this book. It is a book that everyone must read. The author came to know the infinite emotions of the heart and now knows that we can never reach the bottom of that resource. She opened herself to painful words, nostalgia and dreams: dreams that went beyond any extreme situation and found that there still is creativity and human palpitation for a future womanhood. Studying the diaries and the intense narration of such internal wounds and emotions hiding in the incarcerated, opened another world to the author. In Joseph Conrad’s words from his novel Victory (1915): the narration “brings good or evil to the innocence of the inhabitants - gifts of unknown things, words never heard before”. The author, Scarlett Jensen, wrote this book as Alice.

About the Author
This is a story based on true life happenings of Alice who lived in the black hole of sexual abuse, crime and punishment. The book gave the Scarlett Jensen a means of expression while she climbed into the skin of Alice. She mixed with Alice’s blood to bring this reality to light. While writing the book, she lived in Alice’s skin in that prison cell. The author lives in South Africa. She graduated from the University of Pretoria and majored in Psychology, Sociology and Criminology. In the course of her 27 years of public administration in the South African government service, she gained top level administrative and managerial qualifications and experience in human resources. As government officer she was involved in the compilation and processing of legislation, cabinet memoranda and procedure manuals while being occupied in the management and promotion of education, arts, culture, language, science and technology. Before her retirement from the public service in 1999, she was also involved in the compilation of an English Technical Language Dictionary for Human Resources and Public Administration for South Africa’s National Terminology Services. In 1999 she completed her International Course in Aesthetics and Body Therapy specializing in Swedish massage and reflexology. For her dissertation she wrote a study guide for the practice of Aesthetics and Body Therapies in a clinical situation. As a health and beauty specialist, principal and lecturer, she managed her own clinic and school until 2010. The author’s mother tongue is Italian which enabled her to scrutinize Italian literature and also present real life experiences of women in jail in Italy. For the past three years, she is a freelance writer living near Cape Town in the Western Cape, South Africa. It was during this period that she became acquainted with the story of Alice which was related to her in her professional capacity.
