What an Old Lady Wears Nobody cares What an old lady wears Except the old lady herself. Her favorite designers, No longer headliners, Are old hat like hats on her shelf. That dress from the fifties Still looks mighty nifty She thinks as she strikes her old pose. And that is the reason Why every new season She claims she does not need new clothes When I Was Young When I was young and five-foot-ten I was much taller than most men. Old age produced a shorter me. I’m five-foot-eight, but woe is me. Those cute guys shrunk to five-foot-seven, Or even worse, they went to heaven. Which Way? My sense of direction I’m sorry to say Is constantly sending me off the wrong way. If I am to get there while it is still light, I’ll have to turn left though I feel right is right. Wild Apples Ever see an apple tree Growing wild and growing free? Lovely blossoms in the spring, But the crop that fall will bring – Crippled, gnarly, wormy fruit, And a sour taste to boot. It’s a mighty price to pay – Apples Mother Nature’s way.   Window West I was born at set of sun And love to see it set. Fate is cruel, I’ve not had A western window yet. Spain and France and Italy Spain and France and Italy. The tour was great. What did I see? Um, sad to say I can’t recall. I do believe we had ball. The food was great or good or fair. I ate it all, so must not care. The people on the bus were swell, All crammed together you can tell Nice folks don’t crab and make a fuss When squished for hours on a bus. I have great photos of the trip, But here is where I made a slip. I wonder where those sights might be— Spain or France or Italy? Thank$ It’s nice to be appreciated Even when you’re overrated. For the cash and card, I give my thanks. Flowers tend to wilt and die While candy sends blood sugar high, But cash is welcome at all stores and banks. Waiting Room I’m waiting for the doctor. What a splendid chance for me To wile all the hours away— As opportunity To do some writing. After all I came here close to noon. The notebook slowly filling up Will be a novel soon.
