July 4, 1972 We know the world lacks a Christmas. The daily 6 o’clock special brings Bombs, and fires, and cease-fires and things of all manner lacking a Christmas. They joke and so do we to stay sane In a world that refuses to be tamed. But I have peace with that world. I seek my own Yuletide, Celebrate in my own time. I am at one with truth Its own god and my only mentor.

About the Book
A wonderful English teacher inspired a love of poetry in Mr. Lockett during his senior year in high school. Future Memories of Trains is a collection of poems written by Mr. Lockett during the intense and tumultuous process of racial integration in America. Being the “speck of pepper” in these elite bowls of sugar -- elite independent schools -- Mr. Lockett’s poetry explores the precarious nature of inter-racial relationships and the power of love in the midst of extraordinary American social change.
About the Author
MICHAEL G. LOCKETT has been a teacher of history and science in the most competitive independent schools in the New York City area for nearly forty years. He grew up in working-class Cleveland, Ohio. As a young African-American, he experienced the turmoil of the 1960s first hand as part of a group of black students who occupied Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall in 1968. After that experience he dedicated his life to understanding the nature and persistence of America’s tenacious adherence to racialism.
