Being a political “junkie,” it was inevitable that there would emerge a satirical poem about a word that politicians and media people, among others, use for their own agenda and advantage. Clearly Pundits and experts use it shamelessly on TV. Politicians employ it every chance they get. Leaders and statesmen add it to their speeches every day. Ministers, mullahs, rabbis, and priests thank whatever God they pray to That it came their way. It used to be that whatever you’d say by its very nature Was understood. It used to be that you didn’t have to explain. But with all the obfuscation today in the global media neighborhood, That cliché “clearly,” in one word, makes it plain as day. If I had the power to erase one word from the lexicon of the world, Then “clearly” would clearly disappear. It would never again make the obvious obvious, And never obscure all that was said before. We’d have to live with all the lies and half-truths thrown at us, Recognize all that as bullshit, and call it what it is once more.

ROBERT J. MACK is a playwright, poet, and essayist. He was an editor and publisher for a financial services corporation before retiring from corporate life. His other works include essays on American Thinker and an article in Visiting Nurse Service of New York Magazine. He lives in Annapolis, Maryland, with his wife Catherine.
