If you are considering having a new home designed, this book is for you. Further, it is the goal of this book to help you know what things you and your architect will need to bring to the table, and what to expect of the process – how you can prepare, what factors affect design decisions, the various steps involved, the amount of time needed to accomplish them, what services to expect from your architect, what consultants may be required, dealing with building departments, governing jurisdictions, and finally, what will the end result be? Armed with this and other information, you will find that instead of being apprehensive about the process, you may find it to be an exciting and enjoyable venture. Having an awareness of the design process and relationship will help to establish realistic expectations and make for a pleasant and memorable undertaking. While this publication is focused primarily on the design of new custom homes, most of the information contained within applies in principle to remodels and additions. The chapters, in general, are organized chronologically to align with how your relationship with your architect will progress as the design process unfolds. To get an overview, it will be beneficial to read the book from cover to cover. You can use it at any point in the process as a reference tool as well. Isolated chapters may be considered independently if they hold information that you are specifically interested in. In addition, charts, schedules, and pictures have been provided to assist you and your architect in working together. It is our purpose to answer the most commonly asked question and concerns about designing a home. In so doing it is our goal to reasonably inform you about the architectural process so you know what to expect, what to do, and what to avoid, and so that you can maintain a meaningful and effective dialogue with your architect. Rick Kadello & Paul Larsen provide architectural design services for Custom and Estate Residential, Residential Remodels, Wineries, Tasting Rooms and Light Commercial projects in Sonoma, Napa and Marin Counties and abroad via internet services. The experience of both Rick Kadello and Paul Larsen in the field of design dates back to when we worked together in a local design firm for several years. Based upon common business principles and design philosophies Kadello and Larsen was established and has been a fixture in Sonoma County architecture since 1993. We have a passion for design and working with our clients to realize their architectural ideas. Our accomplishments over the years include homes in all types of settings, such as prestigious subdivisions, country estates, coastal contemporary, and city infill conditions. In addition our portfolio includes the design of full winery facilities and tasting rooms. Our years of experience in one location have allowed us to establish long running relationships with local building officials and numerous consultants to benefit our client’s projects. We take our art seriously and work to keep up with the latest trends in architecture, from the aesthetics of architecture and design, to the latest materials, the administrative challenges, and the medium in which architecture is now practiced.
