Logan and Hannah were out of school for spring break and were already bored by the second day of their vacation. As they were swinging in their back yard, they looked up at the giant oak tree and pictured a sturdy tree house where they could hide from an imaginary scoundrel looking to do them harm or a hungry wild animal searching for his next meal. And a tree house would be a great place to relax after they were finished with their chores.
“Hannah,” Logan said, “let’s build a tree house in that big tree. It would be the perfect place for us to spend the rest of our break.” Hannah agreed that it would be great fun. They went into their father’s tool shed to look for wood and other building supplies for their tree house. They took the materials out to the tree and made another trip for more wood. After they had gathered all the supplies they thought they would need, they found their father’s ladder. It was a struggle, but between the two of them, they got the ladder up against the giant trunk of the oak tree.
They started to climb the ladder with the wood and tools but it was difficult to manage everything. Hannah sighed and said, “Logan, I think we are going to have to ask Daddy for some help. This is too big a project for us to do all by ourselves.”
“Yes”, Logan agreed, “we are going to need help. Daddy will be home from work soon. Let’s ask him if he has time to help us.” While they waited for Daddy to get home from work, they got out a notebook and began to draw a picture of what the tree house should look like. “This is going to be great, Logan,” said Hannah. “I can’t wait for our tree house to be done.”
When Daddy drove into the driveway after work, Logan and Hannah ran up to his car before he could even get out. They both shouted at once, “Daddy, we want to build a tree house in the big oak tree in the back yard and we need your help. We already have all the supplies and the ladder and we are ready to get started.”
“Well now,” Daddy said, “let’s go in the house and have our supper and then we will take a look at what you have in mind.”
Logan and Hannah were so excited they could hardly eat. “We don’t want any dessert, Mommy, because we want to get right outside and start work on our tree house.”
“This is a first,” Mommy said. “You kids never turn down dessert. You must really be excited about this tree house. But you know the rules. You have to help with the dishes and clean up the kitchen first.” Logan and Hannah finished their chores in record time and raced out to the back yard.
“We are done with our chores and ready to get started, Daddy.” Logan said. “We are going to keep all our favorite things in our tree house and maybe we will even live in it.”
“Now don’t get ahead of yourselves,” Daddy said. “There is a lot of planning and work to do before we get this tree house completed and you are ready to move in.”
“Well then let’s get started. We are wasting time just talking about it,” Logan said. “Come on, Daddy, we can’t wait another minute.”
Daddy went into the bedroom to change his clothes. He headed out to the back yard to find Logan and Hannah hard at work with a hammer and nails. They were certainly determined to get the tree house completed as quickly as possible.
“Daddy, we brought all the wood and tools out from the tool shed and put up the ladder. Everything is ready for you to get started.”
“Okay,” said Daddy, “let me see your plans.”
Daddy looked at their drawing and started working. It took several days, but the tree house was completed and Logan and Hannah were thrilled as they climbed the ladder Daddy had made on the giant tree trunk and crossed the threshold into their tree house for the first time.
“Oh, Daddy”, Logan and Hannah said together, “this is the best tree house ever. Thank you so much. You are the best daddy.”
Then Mommy came out to inspect their work. “I hope this is very secure so you kids won’t fall or get hurt.” Daddy assured her that he had taken great care to make sure the children would be safe in their new refuge. “Well okay then”, Mommy said. “I guess it will be okay for you to play out here. Have fun, kids.”
“Thanks, Mommy.” Logan and Hannah had feared that Mommy would be too afraid to let them play because she was worried about their safety.
Mommy said, “Let me go in the house and see if I can find some furniture for your tree house. You will need something to sit on when you are playing here, and maybe a little table too.”
“Great! Thanks, Mommy,” the children said.
During her prayers that evening, Mommy asked God to keep the children safe in their new tree house.
“Hannah, this is going to be the best spring break ever. I can’t wait to get started playing,” said Logan. “Let’s go to our rooms and get some toys to play with in the tree house.”
By the end of the day, Mommy had found a small table and two chairs, a rug for the floor, and curtains for the windows. Logan and Hannah had stocked the tree house with all their favorite treasures and games and they were ready to start their new adventure as The Tree House Kids.
