Forged in Philadelphia is an historical novel for middle grade to young adult readers. It depicts a time in America’s history that is rarely explored. It’s 1792, George Washington is the President and Philadelphia is the capital of the nation. The war for independence from England has been won but personal independence is still elusive for many.
Adam is the son and apprentice to his father’s blacksmith business but aspires to follow a different path and pursue a life in coining at the new Mint. Christian, their family’s household slave, also yearns for freedom, especially after meeting and forming a relationship with Ona Judge, Lady Martha Washington’s personal maid.
Adam’s chance meeting with David Rittenhouse, newly appointed Director of the Mint, presents him with the opportunity to serve his country by designing and producing silver coins for foreign distribution. But high-grade silver is scarce. Adam dares to suggest that the Washington’s personal household silver would be an acceptable substitute. Adam’s involvement with President and Lady Washington causes him to overhear a conversation between them in which he learns of their plan to return Ona to Mount Vernon in order to avoid granting her freedom. Ona and Christian are cast into circumstances that highlight Philadelphia as the forefront of the early abolitionist movement. His strong bond to Christian presents Adam with the ultimate dilemma; choosing between his loyalty to Christian’s quest for happiness, or his loyalty to the President of the United States.
This is a book about coming of age, having the courage of one’s convictions and holding strong human values. It is an excellent teaching tool, set within a true little-known story in American history.

About the Book
The year is 1792, and although American independence has been secured, individual freedoms are still elusive for many. Adam Eckfeldt is an apprentice to his father’s blacksmith business. For his father Jacob, there is no question the young man will someday replace him, but Adam has other aspirations.
The Eckfeldt family slave has his own dreams. Christian yearns for emancipation. This yearning only increases when he falls in love with Ona Judge, maid to Lady Martha Washington.
In post-revolutionary Philadelphia, Adam and Christian must forge the pathway to their dreams. These friends navigate the unfamiliar territory of the early abolitionist movement as well as the ins and outs of the Washington household. Their unlikely friendship and their loyalties are tested as they each face dilemmas that will alter the course of their young lives.
About the Author
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Rebecca Eckfeldt Gibby honed her writing skills on children’s drama and primary song lyrics. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree from Drew University. She lives in Chatham, New Jersey. This is her first novel.
