As I sat atop the can I could just barely hear someone’s conversation over the crowd. “What are the chances I’d actually see him like this?”
“It’s a small world I guess.”
“I don’t really understand why he didn’t recognize me though.”
“Just go talk to him.”
“What if he doesn’t like me?”
“He helped you blind didn’t he?”
“Yeah… It was really sweet of him to stop, most people just keep driving.”
“Most people would be afraid to get in his car.”
“I was stranded, what was I supposed to do”
“You could have walked.”
“It took like fifteen minutes to drive to the nearest gas station that was actually open; I would have been a Popsicle by then.”
“People used to do it before we ever had cars.”
“So… It still looked like a gold plated limo at the time.”
The male voice had a really deep chuckle, “Yeah a real fancy limo with a dent in the side.” It started to get a little weird though, “Are you sure you’d even want him? He’s driving a beater, I doubt he’s very well off.”
“I don’t care what it looks like, it’s what he does with it that counts.”
“You never know what he’s going to do in the future.”
“I didn’t even think people would do something like that these days, he won’t hurt me.”
“I just don’t want to see him take advantage of you.”
“He wants to go to school for electrical engineering and toy around with transmitters, how would that be taking advantage of me?"
“Kids his age are known for job hopping and changing their majors, I don’t think it is a good idea.”
“No way, he wouldn’t even take anything. And I was vulnerable from the moment I met him.”
“Are you going to talk to him?”
“I don’t know, he probably already has a girlfriend.”
“If he is as good a guy as you think he is, he probably has a wife. Maybe he’s humping that guy you saw him with.”
To say the least, it was weird. She was silent for a moment so I got up to wash my hands, “He just turned around and walked away like it didn’t even matter though…”
After cleaning up I walked out into the lobby and took my time. It was plausible right? No one in the room looked familiar though, and everyone seemed to be engaged in their own conversations. So I stood in the middle of the room like an idget for a couple of seconds.
I couldn’t hear anything other than my own breath, “Maybe I smoked too much on the way here…” and I couldn’t see anyone even glancing my way…. I swirled around and glanced through the room, “Yeah I think I’m losing it.”
I still had a personal deadline though, so I flopped back down by my kindle. Was I going crazy? I had to take another look around before putting my ear buds in. I guess that’s what I get for eve’s dropping, one group was planning a party, one was talking about prom, another some vacation in Colorado…. So I dug back into chapter two, where Tesla promoted his... social views. Unfortunately my idol was a bit of a nut.
Maybe a half an hour or so later just in-between two songs I just barely heard the words like whisperings through the paper thin walls of my buds, “I don’t get it through! He just walked by again?” Many refer to tesla as a recluse “No I don’t want to! That’s his job!” Many refer to him as a man beyond his time, “I can’t believe it, he was so sweet.” Many claim he was a sweet and gentle man, who consistently promoted the use of his inventions for the common good of mankind. “I don’t care if he smokes! As long as he doesn’t do it around me.” Several influential personalities like Mark Twain, Marconi, and Thomas Edison kept in contact with him over the years. “Why didn’t he recognize me! I just wanted to talk to him!?” It is often claimed that few engineers are as accurate as he, few are as innovative, and he even had a knack for romantics as a poet.
Finally she was loud enough to get my attention so I jerked up from my kindle to see what all the commotion was about. Nothing though, no one was looking my way.
