Breathe. . . My breaths shuddered; icy fog formed on my lips and was released into the cold air. I was alone. Breathe . . . This didn’t change. I was scared. It was dark. There was nothing but moonlight, cold stone, and the tattered nightgown which I wore. I was trying to keep from the insanity on which I was bordering, but it wasn’t helping. How can I keep losing everything I love? Why is this happening to me? No, no, nothing’s wrong. It will be all right. Nothing bad will happen. I sat there on the stone floor, my back against the wall, knees tucked into myself, bare-foot, and tears descending down my face and pooling on the granite beneath me. Everything . . . is fine. I choked on my tears and buried my face in-between my knees, wanting it all to be over. Just breathe . . . I regained my breath and it shuddered faster than before. I breathed in through my nose and out through my mouth, deep intakes, deep breaths. When I thought about how wet my face was I didn’t think it possible that I would ever dry. The flood stopped, and there were no more tears. I’ve been wrung dry. I gripped my aching ribs with my blood-stained hand as I stood and faltered, stumbling over to the small window, so I could stare upon the night. I grasped and clung to the bars within the window before I collapsed. I heaved myself to stand and look through and out into the dark of the night. I saw no land, only thrashing waves, hurtling the boulders in the ocean at the tower’s base, and the freezing light of the moon.

About the Author
Dorrie Rechner is a young novelist, making her debut as a newly published author with her first fully finished novel “True Love’s Riddle”. Although only seventeen, and yet to graduate, she has set herself up for greatness with her multitude of high-level courses in the hopes of attending the UofA (University of Alberta) to pursue her career as a chemical engineering major, with a minor in a creative writing course. Dorrie Rechner has always had a passion for the pen and all that it entails, and so when she discovered Wordsworth, a writing camp for youth, she had to attend, and has been attending each summer every year since. Although, writing is not her only desire. Dorrie also enjoys other forms of artwork, such as drawing, painting, photography, sculpting, etc. Having been in many herself, she also enjoys exercise and sports-related activities, such as football, basketball, swimming, dancing, hockey, long-distance running, and so forth. Dorrie Rechner has also been a part of her school’s drama program, participating in any way she can, whether it be onstage or through set painting. Also an active member of her community, she takes part in the student council and is sure to be seen at any school-driven event, from a dance to the annual “March 4 A Cure” cancer research fund-raiser. But most importantly is her love of music. Dorrie has played the piano for ten years and lives with a headphone plugged in at all times. True Love’s Riddle, although written in only a year and edited over the span of two, will have reached its aspired destination within four. This Albertan female is watching in anticipation as her dreams come true, and continuing to write all the while.
